I set aside a week to talk to different carrier reps and get the details we needed about peak fees. They come out at different times, leaving you little time to plan and act.

I now treat peak fees as part of holiday planning. I am also seeing some carriers use their approach to these fees as a point of difference.

Start with your carrier below. Confirm which fees apply to your account before comparing the full cost of shipping your parcels.

Which peak fees could affect your parcels?

These are Canadian-dollar fees for shipping within Canada. Dates start in 2026 and end in 2027. A “+” is added to the regular fee; Canada Post shows the total seasonal fee. Shipping, fuel and tax are separate.

Carrier Handling fee period Seasonal handling fee Home-delivery peak fee
UPS Canada Sep 20 to Jan 16 +$7.70 additional handling; +$77 large package, per package. +$0.75 per package may apply from Oct 25 to Jan 16. Also covers business deliveries. Confirm your account.
FedEx Canada Sep 28 to Jan 17 +$6.50 additional handling; +$60 oversize. Ground: per package. Express: per shipment. Ground: +$1 or +$2 per package. Express: +$1.50 or +$2.50 per shipment. Oct 26 to Jan 17, only for qualifying high-volume accounts. See conditions below.
Canpar Express Oct 16 to Jan 18 +$7 extra care, overlength or overweight; +$50 oversize, per package. +$2 per shipment may apply from Oct 30 to Jan 18, subject to volume and growth conditions below.
Loomis Express Oct 16 to Jan 18 +$7 special handling, oversized or overweight; +$50 large package, per package. +$2 per shipment may apply from Oct 30 to Jan 18, subject to volume and growth conditions below.
Purolator Oct 25 to Jan 16 +$6.50 additional handling, oversized or residential heavyweight; +$60 large package, per piece. No general ordinary-home-delivery peak fee listed in the notice checked. Regular fees can still apply.
Canada Post Nov 2 to Jan 10 Oversize or unpackaged: $30 total, up from $21. No general ordinary-home-delivery peak fee listed in the notice checked. Regular fees can still apply.

Your agreement determines what you pay. Each carrier defines its own size and handling categories. An exclusion from a home-delivery fee does not remove applicable handling fees.

Home-delivery volume conditions

FedEx tests whether an account exceeds 7,000 weekly average packages across Express and Ground domestic residential and commercial shipments combined. It compares volume with March 2 to March 29, 2026, separately for Express and Ground. Above 110% through 200% of baseline volume attracts the lower rate; above 200% attracts the higher rate. The September 28 to October 11 assessment sets charges for October 26 to December 6; the November 9 to November 22 assessment sets charges for December 7 to January 17. FedEx prorates holiday weeks and determines account scope. Qualifying accounts above 200% must obtain approval for a demand volume schedule. Contracted residential discounts do not apply to the addition.

Canpar and Loomis may apply the fee above 2,000 residential shipments per business day or 10,000 per week in any week of November or December. It applies only to volume above 200% of the May 31 to June 28, 2026 weekly average where the carrier has not given written consent for the increase. The carrier determines application at its discretion. Volume alone does not establish that every shipment attracts the fee.

Tires and parcels over the carrier’s limits

Seasonal additions: UPS over maximum limits, +$495 per package. FedEx unauthorized, +$475 per Ground package or Express domestic shipment. Canpar and Loomis over maximum size or weight, +$450 per package; tires, +$20 per piece alongside applicable handling fees. Purolator over maximum limit, +$450 per piece. These follow the handling periods above. Canada Post out-of-spec: $400 total during its peak period, up from $300.

What should you do now?

  1. Check your packed box sizes and weights against your carrier's handling rules, including holiday bundles.
  2. Get written confirmation of the fees, dates and exclusions for your account. Do not assume your regular-fee discount also covers the seasonal addition. Purolator explicitly excludes that carry-over.
  3. Compare the same parcels and delivery requirements, including base shipping, regular fees, peak additions and fuel. Confirm pickup capacity before changing carriers.

For illustration, 2,000 packages subject to a $0.75 addition cost $1,500 extra before fuel and tax. Your parcel mix and account terms determine your own number.

Check current fuel rates and ordinary extra fees alongside this table. If you need a larger pickup vehicle, arrange it with your carrier early.

When should you ship for Christmas?

Use these 2026 send-by guidelines for shipments within Canada. Click a service to see the carrier's original dates. For UPS, Purolator, Canpar and Loomis, a current Christmas cutoff was not verified in the sources checked; use the linked planning tools instead.

FedEx Economy December 21
FedEx 2Day December 22

UPS Canada Calculate time and cost
Purolator Estimate time and cost

Set your store's order cutoff earlier than the carrier's send-by date so you have time to pick, pack and hand over the parcel. Confirm your postal codes, service and pickup date with the carrier before promising Christmas delivery. For days carriers are closed, use our Canadian Carrier Holiday Closures tool.

Which routes do these dates cover?

FedEx's dates target December 24 arrival in most metropolitan areas. They exclude shipments from Western provinces, including Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, to Atlantic provinces. Ground dates assume a scheduled pickup or drop-off at a staffed FedEx location. Canada Post's dates are between major urban centres and depend on origin and destination; restrictions apply. Transit-time tools are planning estimates, not published Christmas cutoffs or delivery guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

Are peak fees part of the annual rate increase?

Peak fees apply during a stated period. Annual increases change your regular shipping rates. Both can affect your bill at the same time. See our Canadian Carrier Rate Increase Tracker.

Is the carrier with the lowest peak fee cheapest?

Compare the full cost of the same parcel and service. A lower peak fee can come with a higher shipping rate or other charges. Your negotiated agreement can also change the result.

Check your own shipping costs

It probably feels like another set of fees to work through before your busiest weeks. Send one recent carrier invoice for a free written analysis of your shipping rates and extra fees. No call required.
